Upon failing to find him he suddenly remembered what he had previously told Lennie to do if he ever found himself in trouble, he had told him to hide in the brush until he came to find him. As he stood there leaning against the barn door, staring at the ground as if in a daze, wondering what to do next, the rest of the workers raced into the barn having been alerted by Candy. Curley who was wondering what all the fuss was about jogged towards the crowd of men only to find to his horror the body of his dead wife. Curley, who was now heart broken at the loss of his wife screamed with fury and swore that if he ever found Lennie, he would kill him. George and the workers, led by Curley, set off to find Lennie and to bring him to justice for what he had done. When the party arrived at the suspected location of Lennie, they were all split up and a massive search had begun. George knew where Lennie was so he rushed towards the spot where he was hiding. As he had predicted in his mind, Lennie was sitting there like a little child, oblivious to what was going on around him. George grabbed Lennies shoulder and shook him up to attract his attention. Lennie looked up, happy to see Georges face. Having got his attention George immediately began to explain to Lennie what he had done and because of it, that they now had to flee. Just as he was doing so he heard a disturbance in the bushes and immediately turned round to see what it was. There stood Slim, staring at the both of them shaking his head at pity for the both of them. George knew what had to be done but pleaded to Slim to let them both go. He explained to Slim about Lennies current position and that he would never be able to survive if they were to put him in prison. Slim being a very righteous man was also very sympathetic  towards them. He reluctantly let them go and gave them his best wishes for the future and that they would be able to live out their dream in the not too distant future. Encouraged by Slims words George grabbed hold of Lennie and they both rushed across the river over to the other side. As they were doing so they could hear the footsteps in the bushes of the other men as they rushed to where Slim was standing. Lennie turned his head to see what was happening but George told him not to do that but instead keep looking towards the future and to never look back. Lennie did just that and as they ran towards the sunset Lennie said something to George that brought a tear to his eye. He said in his child like voice, George you are truly my best friend! This raises questions on the accuracy and effectiveness of the interviews. Sometimes the interviewers are influenced by the perceptions and stereotypes they hold about the candidate. Lewis et al (2007, p.246) suggested several ways of solving the above problem: introducing structured format of interview whereby same question are asked in the same order for each candidate; and inquiring for more information based on what the interviewee has said. It was also suggested that the following points for effective interviewer: asking precise questions, avoiding perceptions, avoiding discriminative questions, taking good time before concluding and ‘keeping written records of the interviews’ (p.246). They concluded by saying that interviewers should take time to explain clearly to the candidates what the job really entails and focus entirely on the positive attributes of the job. Peer AssessmentPeer assessment is another approach that is preferred by some companies. Peers are people who have direct interaction with individual and knows individual well. This places the peer in a better position to assess the candidate. In this approach peer assesses the candidate and give their opinion. However, this method is considered as ineffective (McKenna 2000, p.534). Peers may not be willing to give genuine information about their colleges that they feel will ruin their changes of securing the job. Any approach used to select candidates for employment must be fair to all candidates and eliminate situations that give a specific candidate undue advantage over the others. McKenna (2000, p.534) commented that some ‘ethnic minorities do not perform as well as other applicants in many test of intelligence and aptitude’. To add to its popularity, Forensic Specialist jobs also include TV shows like CSI, or Crime Scene Investigators. The Forensic Specialist job field also has many subcategories which consist of forensic science consultants, fingerprint technicians and examiners, evidence technicians and forensic investigators. When it comes to schooling, In order to become a Forensic Specialist, several factors come into play. So just because you or someone else you may know, have a 4 year bachelors degree doesn’t always get you the job. Other factors that come into the play of this matter are training programs one may have taken, and or certificates or other degrees that a person may have obtained. The schooling usually only takes 2 years for an associates degree and 4 years for a bachelors. The pay of all science technicians, forensic specialist/scientists currently earn the second highest annual salary. In 2002 that pay was about $19. 73 an hour or approximately $41,000 but that isn’t the highest nor the lowest pay of a specialist. Depending on your rank, you could make as much as $31. 49 an hour or $65,000 annually and as low as $12. 06 an hour and $25,100 annually. The pay of a Forensic Specialist is determined on factors like the type of specialist you are, the rank in which you uphold, years of experience and the type of employment and its location. In 2012 the pay for a Forensic Specialist field will increase its pay by 19% with 360 job positions opening up each year. In conclusion to my research of becoming a Forensic specialist, I have came to make a choice to be one myself. For one I love investigating crime scenes, the pay sounds very good, and being as how I won’t graduate until 2013 or 2014 the pay that is suppose in 2012 will be even more once I start looking for a job in the field. Schooling to become such an expert isn’t all that bad, I mean 2 to 4 years isn’t a bad time limit for taking classes to get the degree I need to become a Forensic Specialist and to me will be well worth the money. Ivan Pavlov and Classical Conditioning 1904 Nobel Prize Winner, Ivan Pavlov was born in Ryazan, Russia on September 14, 1849. Pavlov is best known for his intricate workings with the drooling dog experiment that lead to his further research in conditioning. This experiment, which began in 1889, had an influence on the development of physiologically oriented behaviorist theories of psychology in the early years of the nineteenth century. His work on the physiology of the digestive glands won him the 1904 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine. CONTRIBUTIONS Pavlov's first independent work focused on the physiology of the circulation of the blood (Girogian, 1974). He studied the influence of variations in blood volume on blood pressure. He also investigated the nervous control of the heart, and argued that four types of nerves control rhythm and strength of cardiac contractions. It was during this first independent study that Pavlov used unanesthetized, neurologically intact dogs (Girogian, 1974). This method became the mainstay of Pavlov’s methodology. Pavlov’s second independent work centered primarily around digestion. He started studying digestion as early as 1879, and it was his major focus from 1890 to 1897 (Girogian, 1974). His work was an accumulation of observations on the nervous control of one organ system through the method of chronic experiment (Girogian, 1974). The study of digestion involved developing "fistulas" through which secretions from salivary glands, stomach, the pancreas, and small intestine could be collected (Girogian, 1974). His technique was truly unique in that he did not cut the nerve supply nor contaminate the secretions with food. The most famous and well-known experiment of Pavlov is that he 'conditioned' dogs to start a salivary response to the sound of a bell. He began by measuring the amount of salivation in response to only food. As the experiments continued, he rang a bell as he presented the food (Girogian, 1974). Again, he noted a salivary response. Finally, by only ringing the bell, Pavlov observed the same response as having presented food to the dogs . . . salivation (Girogian, 1974). These experiments defined what has been a "conditioned response". CLASSICAL CONDITIONING Classical Conditioning is the type of learning made famous by Pavlov's experiments ... ... a Nobel Laureate for his research in a different field (Fredholm, 1999). In 1904, he received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his pioneering studies of how the digestive system works. Until Pavlov started to scrutinize this field, our knowledge of how food was digested in the stomach, and what mechanisms were responsible for regulating this, were quite foggy. In order to understand the process, Pavlov developed a new way of monitoring what was happening. He surgically made fistulas in animals' stomachs, which enabled him to study the organs and take samples of body fluids from them while they continued to function normally (Fredholm, 1999). Feminist views in the Canterbury Tales Essay

The book The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer holds a collection of stories based in medieval times of several people undergoing a journey. Along the way each character stops to tell a story that teaches a moral. These stories all have their own protagonists that share the storyteller’s beliefs and each tale is told with a unique viewpoint on the changing world. At the end of each tale, the main character faces their judgment or reckoning and a lesson imparts itself upon them. The Wife of Bath’s tale and the Nun’s Priest tale both exemplify this idea clearly and share conflicting views on the role of women during the time period. In the pro-feminist tale of the Wife of Bath the young knight faces his judgment at the end when he allows his wife to choose her appearance and, in the antifeminist Nun’s Priest tale, the rooster, known as Chanticleer, faces his judgment when the fox kidnaps him. The first character that faces his reckoning is the young knight in the tale told by the Wife of Bath. The Wife of Bath presents a pro-feminist view in a time when women were seen as objects and the dilemma the knight faces relates to the theme of the story of how trusting in women always results in happiness. The knight rapes a maiden and is punished by the queen and forced to find what women want the most. Just as the knight is about to give up his search, he stumbles upon a ragged old woman that tells him that she has the answer he seeks but will only reveal it to him if he promises to complete a task for her in the future. He says yes and she tells him that women want dominion over their husbands. He faces his reckoning at the end of the story, after he has married the old woman, when his wife allows him to choose her appearance. He responds, â€Å"My lady and my love, and wif so dere, I putte me in youre wise governaunce† (p234 lines 1236-1237). He is then rewarded for giving supremacy to his wife and she chooses to be beautiful and faithful. The knight reaches this epiphany through his journey, as he had to treat women with respect and give them dominion over himself in order to save his life. This reckoning is appropriate for the knight because, at the beginning of the story, he did not respect women but, throughout his search, he learns that treating women equally and being submissive to them leads to happiness. The second character that faces his reckoning is Chanticleer from the Nun Priest’s tale. Chanticleer is the best rooster in all the land but one day he has a bad dream. He tells his wife of his dream and she lashes out at him saying, â€Å"I can nat love a coward, by my faith. For certes, what so any womman saith, we alle desiren, if it might be, to han a housbondes hardy wise and free† (p252 lines 91-94). This idea contrasts greatly with that of the Wife of Bath’s, which said that women only want dominion over their husbands. Chanticleer chooses to ignore his dream, against his own wishes, in order to please his wife. However, he comes to face his judgment when a fox comes and steals him from the coup. Chanticleer is almost killed for listening to his wife but manages to escape the fox’s grip and get away. This judgment is appropriate for Chanticleer as he represents male supremacy in society. When he listens to his wife above his own intuition he is nearly killed. This tales shows a strong antifeminist viewpoint, in contrast with that of the Wife of Bath, and portrays women as the downfall of man. The narrator even says, â€Å"Wommenes conseils broughte us first to wo, and made Adam fro paradis to go, there as he was ful merye and wel at ese. But for I noot to whom it might displese if I conseil of women wolde blame, pass over† (p259 lines 436-442). The Wife of Bath and the Nun’s Priest tale both show how the characters faced their reckoning after listening to the women in their lives. In the Wife of Bath’s tale the knight is rewarded for treating women with respect while, in the Nun’s Priest tale, Chanticleer is punished. Chaucer wrote these two stories because they show the clash of views on women’s roles in society at that time. While the Wife of Bath supports women’s rights, the Nun’s priest tale condemns them and says women are nothing but pure evil. This clash still exists today and one might wonder if people today could learn a lesson from these two characters.

Florida Cop Killer Shot 68 Times by SWAT Team On September 28, 2006, Angilo Freeland, 27, a suspected drug dealer, fled from Polk County, Florida, police after he was pulled over in a routine traffic stop by Deputy Douglas Speirs. The deputy called for backup and Deputy Vernon Matthew Williams answered the call with his police dog DiOGi. As they followed the suspect into the woods there was a burst of gunfire and Deputy Williams, a father of three, and his dog were killed and Speirs was wounded in the leg. An autopsy report revealed that Williams, 39, was shot eight times. He was shot once a close range behind his right ear and again in his right temple. Officers also noted that Williams gun and ammunition were missing. After a massive manhunt for the fugitive through the night, a SWAT team surrounded Freeland in a thickly wooded area hiding under a fallen tree. When he failed to show the officers both hands and they spotted a handgun in one of his hands, they opened fire. Freelands autopsy showed that he was shot 68 times. An investigation of the scene revealed that police fired 110 rounds. Thats all the bullets we had, or we would have shot him more, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told reporters. Who Was Angilo Freeland? Investigators later learned through Freelands hand-written journals   found in a search of his home  and interviews with family members, that he was an alleged drug smuggler who often traveled throughout Jamaica and South and Central America.   Born December 25, 1978, in a West Indies island of Antigua, Freeland shared many Rastafarian religious and political beliefs. He was a skilled survivalist with hand-to-hand combat and had extensive weaponry training. Through using several aliases he managed to come and go out of the U.S. at will. Criminal Background On April 24, 1999, Freeland was arrested after refusing to show his hands during a traffic stop within miles of where the 2006 deadly incident took place. According to arrest reports, Freeland was pulled over for speeding by the Florida Highway Patrol. After refusing to show his hands, he fled the scene, and then later ditched his truck and took off on foot. When the troopers searched the truck Freeland had abandoned, they found a loaded .380-caliber handgun and a pawn shop receipt that led them to where Freeland lived. He was arrested on charges of not having a valid drivers license, reckless driving, aggravated fleeing to elude, resisting arrest without violence, and carrying a concealed weapon.   Freeland was released on bail,  but failed to show up for his trial. A warrant was issued, but authorities were unable to locate him and in 2005 it was deemed stale and the case was dropped by the state attorneys office. Operation Sea-O-Pea An investigation into Freelands suspected drug trafficking activity in Florida led to a task force made up of federal, state and local-law-enforcement drug agencies. The investigation  called Operation Sea-O-Pea a.k.a. Diogis Revenge uncovered a drug and weapons connection between Latin America and Florida.   According to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, informants told investigators that Freeland acted as the enforcer of a drug-trafficking ring that dealt in cocaine, cannabis and weapons. He was the alleged rings hit man and suspected of killing up to 15 people who might have been informers or owed money. The investigation resulted in 10 arrests and the confiscation of six firearms, $500 in counterfeit US currency,   and approximately 3.5 pounds of cannabis along with information about two unsolved homicide cases in Orange County, Florida. FBI Investigation Into the Shooting In November 2006, the Department of Justice (DoJ) requested that the FBI investigate the conduct of the authorities involved in the shooting after the Florida Civil Rights Association filed a complaint stating that the incident showed extreme force and a disregard for human life. In June 2008, the DoJ announced that the Polk County Sheriffs Office was cleared of any wrongdoing and that the investigation was closed.
